May 23rd 1934: Bonnie and Clyde killed

On this day in 1934 the infamous American bank robbing duo Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were ambushed by police and killed in Louisiana. Bonnie and Clyde and their gang were outlaws who robbed banks and killed several police officers and civilians from 1931 to 1934. The couple became legendary for their exploits and their love story, especially after Arthur Penn’s 1967 film ‘Bonnie and Clyde’.

8-years ago, CHP Officer Kevin Briggs talked this young man out of jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge.

That young man’s name is Kevin Berthia.
Today he is 30 years old and married with 2 children.
This week he presented Officer Briggs with an award on behalf of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

The story of how Officer Briggs talked Kevin down is remarkable.

As you can see in the picture, Kevin is literally one step away from jumping to his death. But for more than hour, the officer listened to Kevin pour his heart out about his troubles and told him, “I know you think things are bad, but they can get better.”

Kevin says, “Officer Briggs never made me feel guilty for the situation I was in. He made feel like, I understand why you are here, but there are alternatives”

Kevin is just one of countless lives Briggs has saved over his 23 year career.

Briggs, who was promoted to Sergeant five years ago, is humble about what he does. He says, ”they make the decision, when they step back over that rail it takes a tremendous amount of courage”

I salute Sergeant Briggs!

Moved back home. I was going to have a text post/log about my second year at college and how things turned out, but I think all that can wait. I tend to push back my thoughts, or queue them if you will, until they never end up actually getting thought about. My brain is turning into one huge tumblog. But I like to think about humorous things. Here we go.

I’m cleaning up my room. Moving everything back in made me realize how much crap I have stuffed into one small room just a smidgen bigger than the small room at Century. I have a lot of sorting to do: I tend to keep things (not hoard, I’d say, but I’m biased) that have some sort of meaning. I keep all the letters I get, I keep all the papers from school (because we paid for them, basically), I keep all the essays I write, all the books we read (except textbooks, because those suck).

I just realized why the joint on my right hand wrist (articulation at my radius and scaphoid bones?) is hurting: I had folded up over 200 dumplings last night, one after the other. It was fun. Happy graduation to the graduates! I should have been there, but I felt very at peace at home (doing chores, visiting grandparents, making dumplings, reading with Gabs).

Today I went to the library and checked out two books: We Need to Talk About Kevin, and On the Road. Only two this time, because I already have a slew of books I need to read that I bought at LATFOB or borrowed from Vivian or borrowed from my big or bought for a class but never got to or bought from a thrift shop. I suppose I can read on the bus on the way to and from lab this summer.

Back to the humor. This is what my room looked like yesterday.

Day 1: “LOL hey look walking space!” -Michelle Tham. I send her pictures of my messy room to keep her young while she does grown-up stuff in DC.

Day 2: “It’s Always Darkest Before the Dawn”

While Gaby folds up clothes and puts them in my already-stuffed closet (willingly. Kid sisters are the best), I sort through all my old papers from freshman year and stack them up and rubber-band them together. I’m like Pam before she married Jim. Which reminds me, I have to catch up to the Office.
